Easy steps to operate your air conditioning unit easily
Maintain your air conditioner and you will not only save
money on energy, but also extend its lifespan, saving you money on expensive
alternatives sooner. "An AC needs regular attention to make sure it's
operating at high performance," says Dave Moody, HVAC Pro of Service
Experts. The best time to use these tips is before the start of each cooling
season.
Your heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system will
consist of either a furnace and an AC or a heat pump, which is hot and cold.
Both types will have an internal unit vapor and blower and an external unit
condenser coil and compressor. These instructions apply to the entire home air
conditioning or heat pump unit.

Turn off the
electricity
Due to the hazards of working around electricity and moving
parts of the air conditioner, the unit must be completely switched off. On the
external condenser / compressor, find the external shut-off box near the unit.
Even indoors, turn off the power in the breaker box.
Remove debris
On the external condenser / compressor, remove the fan cage.
Using a screwdriver or wrench, remove the fasteners and keep the cage or fan
grille away from the top of the unit. By hand, or with wet / dry vacuum, clean
leaves and other debris from the interior.
Clean the feathers
Remove the outer structure and use the adhesive with a brush
on a powerful shop vacuum to remove all the dirt outside. Then, using a light
stream from a garden hose, spray through the wings from the inside to remove
any build-up of dirt or debris between them. Never use a pressure washer, as
pressure can damage the pins. If the feathers are particularly dirty, use a commercially
available art cleaning spray.
Straighten the wings
Because any reduction in airflow through the wings can
reduce efficiency, carefully straighten the twist pins using a butter knife or
a commercially available art straightening tool. Be gentle so that the tubes
embedded in the wings are not damaged.
Clear the area around
the unit
Once the cleaning is done, replace the fan cage Back leaves
and debris outside the condenser and cut branches and plants at least 2 feet on
each side to ensure proper air flow around the Air Condition. When the
condenser is not in use during the winter months, it is best to cover the top
of the unit with a piece of plywood or plastic to prevent debris from falling.
However, do not cover the sides of the unit completely, as moisture may be
strong inside and due to corrosion. Also, a fully enclosed unit encourages
swelling to build a nest inside it. Remove any cover while the unit is working.
Unit level
Over time, with the help of the pad on which the condenser unit
sits, the soil can start to tip as soon as it comes under it. An external
surface condenser unit can cause skin failure inside the compressor. Check the
condenser for the surface and use rotten sunscreen to bring it back to the
surface. Service experts' Moody's added a discount: "If you have a heat
pump system, it's a good idea to keep the pads slightly away from the
foundation of the house during the winter."
Clean the steam coil
Now it's time to move on. On the blower / furnace unit, find the
vapor coil door. You may need to remove some sheet duct tape and remove some
screws or bolts. Inside, use a soft brush to dust the coil, and then spray the
coil with a commercially available neoclassical coil cleaner. The spray will
foam and then drip into the drain pan. Clean the drain pan with soap, warm
water and a little bleach. Next, pour 50% bleach / 50 water into the drain To
keep the drain clean for a long time, place a commercially available drain pan
tablet in the pan. This prevents algae growth in the future.
If the bleach solution comes off easily, skip the next step. If
not, move on to the next step. Replace the steam coil door and, if necessary,
use foil duct tape to re-seal.
Clean the plugged applicator drain
On the inside, warm, humid air is blown from the inside of your
home through a vapor coil. The cooling coil absorbs heat from the air, cooling
it before the air circulates in your home. Moisture vapor in the air drips onto
the cooled surface of the coil like liquid water, in a pan. From the pan, water
flows into a duct that usually leads to the basement floor drain, utility sink
or outside.
Over time, algae and mold can build up and potentially reverse the
drain, so if the drain is either not flowing or flowing slowly, it will need to
be plugged in. A plugged drain can either hit the floor or cause flooding, or,
if the system is equipped with a float of drains, the system will stop cooling
to avoid flooding.
First, find the line of the duct where the fever leaves the coil
wall. The groove is usually an inch PVC pipe (white, gray, or black). Walk to
the end of it where these drains come from. The line near the condenser unit
often has an outside drain, but it can also drain into a utility sink or
basement floor drain, or even down to the outside wall in the case of attic units.
Once this has happened, use a wet / dry vacuum to clean the drain.
It is best to remove the paper filter with a wet / dry vacuum so that the
filter is not damaged. Hold the wet / dry vacuum hose to the end of the drain
line. You can use duct tape or easily hold a rag around the space. Vacuum for
2-3 minutes then turn off. This will clear the drain of any growing biological
matter.
Replace
blower filter
The filters in your HVAC system should be replaced at least twice
a year - once before the start of the heating season and once before the start
of the cooling season. If you live in a very dusty area, you may want to change
it more often. Always replace this filter with a new filter that is rated as
airflow. Once again, Moody warned, "Beware of 'air purifiers' or HEPA
filters," as they can dramatically reduce airflow in your system. This can
cause freezing of the inner coil due to reduced air flow. "
Locate the filter wall on the indoor furnace / AC where large fresh air enters the return duct unit. You may
need a screwdriver to bend the latch to open the filter wall door. Remove the
old filter and install a new filter, match the air flow direction arrow on the
filter with the unit arrows. Close and close the door.
Turn on the power
While these steps will help keep your AC system in good shape, be
aware that there are maintenance equipment that only a trained HVAC technician
can do. For example, a slow refrigerator leak in your AC system can lead to the
failure of an expensive compressor, but the homeowner does not have the
necessary tools or skills to check the level of the refrigerator. Also, clean
drains and proper air flow are essential for a well-functioning system, but
homeowners lack the equipment needed for the job. Bottom line? Although some AC
maintenance can be done by an intelligent homeowner, it is still important for
an expert technician to check the system from time to time.
